New WHO Regional Director Takes the Reins in Polio Eradication Efforts in Eastern Mediterranean Region

Health Ministers gather in crucial year to discuss polio eradication efforts – Global Polio Eradication Initiative

The WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region recently held its 10th meeting of the Regional Subcommittee on Polio Eradication and Outbreaks, with health ministers from the region gathering virtually to discuss ways to combat polio and work towards its eradication. This was the first meeting convened by the new WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, Dr. Hanan Balhky.

During the meeting, Her Excellency Dr. Hanan Al-Kuwari, Minister of Public Health in Qatar and Subcommittee Co-chair, welcomed Dr. Balhky’s determination to end polio during her tenure. She expressed her support for his vision and expertise in propelling regional efforts. Similarly, His Excellency Mr. Abdul Rahman Mohammed Al Oweis, Minister of Health and Prevention of the United Arab Emirates, and Subcommittee Co-chair, represented by His Excellency Dr. Hussain Al Rand, also expressed their enthusiasm for Dr. Balhky’s leadership.

The health ministers discussed regional strategies to combat polio and shared updates on outbreak responses and vaccination campaigns. They emphasized the importance of collaboration between countries in the region to achieve the common goal of eradicating polio once and for all. Dr. Balhky’s leadership is seen as a promising step towards bringing the world closer to eradicating polio in this region.

The meeting was attended by representatives from several countries in the region including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan among others.

Dr. Balhky emphasized on strengthening collaboration between countries in order to achieve success in eradicating polio.

The subcommittee members acknowledged that there is still a lot of work to be done before we can claim victory over polio but they are optimistic about achieving their goal with proper planning and execution of strategies.

Overall, this meeting was an important milestone towards achieving global eradication of polio as it brought together key stakeholders from different countries in one platform to discuss strategies and share ideas on how best to tackle this deadly disease that has been affecting children for centuries now.
