California-based CalWave Selected as Technology Provider for Groundbreaking Indigenous-led Wave Energy Project in Yuquot, BC

Indigenous-Led Wave Energy Project in Canada Chooses CalWave Technology

Indigenous-led wave energy project at Yuquot, British Columbia (BC) selected CalWave as technology provider

CalWave, a California-based wave energy technology developer, has been chosen as the technology provider for a groundbreaking wave energy project in Yuquot, BC. The project is being undertaken in collaboration with the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation (MMFN) and is backed by funding from TD Bank Group and the Clean Energy in Rural and Remote Communities Program by Natural Resources Canada.

The MMFN’s vision is to reclaim their land, rebuild their community and harness the energy from the North Pacific waves to support their new microgrid. The ultimate goal is to achieve energy self-sufficiency. The partners involved in the project include Pacific Research Institute for Marine Energy Discovery (PRIMED), Barkley Project Group, Canpac Marine Services, and Environmental Dynamics.

The current phase of the project is feasibility and design with the aim of gathering information to help the MMFN make an informed decision on moving forward with full project implementation. This wave energy project at Yuquot could potentially serve as a model for similar projects along the North American Pacific Coast and globally.
