Beijing summit: High-level business leaders meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping to strengthen ties

Xi Jinping of China meets with American male business leaders in exclusive gathering

In Beijing, several prominent business leaders from the U.S. met with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss strengthening ties between the two largest economies in the world. Despite some pushback on the influence of the Chinese Communist Party, the meeting featured only male attendees and highlighted improved relations between China and the U.S.

The attendees included Blackstone founder Stephen Schwarzman, Qualcomm President and CEO Cristiano Amon, Bloomberg Chair Mark Carney, and FedEx President Rajesh Subramaniam. The meeting took place amidst ongoing discussions about trade and tariffs between the two nations leading up to the U.S. presidential election in November.

During the meeting, Xi addressed the impact of COVID-19 on China’s economy and emphasized China’s contribution to global economic growth. He stressed that cooperation or confrontation between China and the U.S. affects not only their people but also mankind’s future as a whole.

President Xi also acknowledged that trade tensions have been a significant issue leading up to the U.S. election, but expressed optimism that both countries could work together as partners towards mutually beneficial outcomes if they view each other with respectful coexistence and collaboration in mind.

In November 2021, President Biden hosted an important step forward in improving relations with China during his visit to San Francisco, where he met with Xi for talks.

Other members of Biden’s administration are expected to host meetings with top Chinese leaders in an effort to continue building better relations between China and America.

Overall, this meeting highlighted the importance of respectful coexistence and collaboration between China and America in order to enhance their relationship further.

As one of several business leaders who participated in this historic meeting, Stephen Schwarzman shared his thoughts on what it means for both nations moving forward:

“It was a privilege to be able to meet with President Xi Jinping today,” said Schwarzman after returning from Beijing.

“We had a productive conversation about how we can continue working together as partners towards mutual success,” he added.
